29978ohh my god a teenager online posted something that reveals a less than perfectly developed understanding of the world around them? should we tell everyone? should we screenshot it and share it everywhere so we can pat ourselves on the back for being so much wiser than Kids These Days? should we invite a boomer comic artist
you will never convince me that a middle schooler with no rights who gets flustered talking about sex is the heart of the global rise in reactionary sentiment we’re dealing with right now and not senator john segregation who drafts 300 anti trans laws a day and wants that middle schooler to die in childbirth

30456Listen, you should never film strangers in public without their consent, but I swear there need to be fines or something for people who do that shit in some spaces. For example: I had to go to the ER last night, and some jerk filmed a woman who just came in and was clearly having an asthma attack. She immediately got to go back, and he was unhappy about that. Believe me, I get that it sucks having to wait when you’re in pain, but you don’t get to pick who deserves care when. The medical system in the US is a nightmare, and the ER could be the worst moment of someone’s life. No one deserves to be recorded because some jack ass believes someone doesn’t look like they need care.
This is fine to reblog. People who film strangers should be shamed if nothing else.
I know a lot of EFR instructors (Emergency first response, the people who teach CPR classes) who used to be ambivalent about this and now are firmly in the “fuck you fuck your phone category.
Maybe its demographics, EFR instructors do tend to be older and less online, but there’s been a shift from voyeur filming being seen as irritating and tasteless to actively harmful.
I met one lady who had an entire section of her lecture based on how to divide labor in emergency and one of those steps was crowd control. If you are taking charge of an emergency situation, you delegate tasks. Point at one person and tell them to call 911, Point at another person tell them to warn traffic, Point at another person tell them to get the first aid kit if you know where it is. You assign small tasks to individuals instead of asking a crowd that way the task actually happens, and you’re not sitting around 20 minutes later wondering why the ambulance is taking so long to show up and it turns out that everyone assumed someone else called.
Now there is another step. Pick a big dude and tell him to stop people from filming. Which is actually the tamest version of what she said, because this lady went on and on about how phones are fragile, light, small, pieces of computer equipment that can be easily punted into oblivion.
And yeah, she’s probably the most vocal proponent of property destruction in the face of voyeur filming I’ve heard lately but she’s far from the only person in emergency services who’s frustrated with the eternal quest for viral videos of strangers pain.
And to be clear there is a huge difference between the paramedic who doesn’t want you filming and the cop who doesn’t want you filming.
The paramedic who doesn’t want you filming is trying to protect someone who is hurt and vulnerable and maybe going through the worst day of their life. That is worthy of respect and if you film someone in medical distress you are a pustulent asshole of a human being.
A cop who doesn’t want you filming is probably trying to violate someone’s civil rights and you should absolutely record away.
To add a small note to anyone who records - in some cases, it is appropriate to film paramedics during a medical emergency because they are not immune to bigotries and abuses of authority.
If paramedics are refusing to treat someone — there are cases of them and firefighters refusing to treat trans people, for example! — or if you see them abusing the person who needs help, absolutely record like you would a cop. Your evidence may help the person in need with insurance or lawsuits later if EMS causes avoidable damage to their bodies or mobility devices.
Recording is a useful tool for holding our communities accountable, not for exploiting our most vulnerable members.

42038I think one of the most profound forms of love is “I’ll try that, for you. I may not like it, but I’ll try it.”
It’s a confused middle-aged man in a pottery class, whose daughter is helping him with his clay’s plasticity. It’s a kid scrunching up their brow while listening to their mom’s favorite music, trying to figure out why she likes it. It’s a girlfriend who says “Yes, I’ll go with you” and her girlfriend cheering and buying a second ticket for a con. It’s a friend half dragging another friend through an aquarium, the one being dragged laughing and calling out “Wait, wait, I know we’re here for the exhibit, but I haven’t been here! Slow down!”
It’s being willing to spend some of your time trying something new because it makes someone you love happy.

39138not-so-friendly reminder that hunting is an important part of conservation in many cases and that painting all hunting as morally, ethically, and/or environmentally “bad” does a major disservice to indigenous people, poor communities, and our environment
Conservation biologists actually work with hunters (and fishers) a lot in monitoring species health! Hunters will often know before anyone else when numbers are declining, have a vested interest in keeping the population around, and are often involved in research collaborations where they bring their kills in to be measured/have tissue taken for research.
There can be tension when restrictions conflict with the need to make rent, and trophy hunters are not included in this (going after only the largest members of a population and not even using the body for food is pretty bad for conservation). But hunters and conservationists can be, and should be, natural allies.
#culling of invasive species is also extremely necessary and people need to understand that#not every animal is able to be rehabilitated and rehomed a lot just need to be culled#emphasis on INVASIVE species though NOT native
The Minnesota DNR has had a program for the last several years where they work with hunters to track Chronic Wasting Disease (a rather nasty neurological disease caused by prions) in local white-tailed deer populations, just as a single example!
Really really REALLY wanna emphasize one of the points no one’s boosting here, that a firm anti-hunting stance is INHERENTLY ANTI-NATIVE. Please don’t forget that these policies are extremely racist towards our already extremely marginalized communities.
I’m also going to add that hunting is just plain fun, rewarding, and one of the best ways to get in touch with the outdoors and nature. Its not called the patience game for nothing.
What hunting is: Patience, work, mornings and evenings when you don’t see a damn thing, falling asleep in the stand, watching wildlife in their natural home, and participating in the natural process of conservation all while helping the research process as well.
What hunting is not:
None of these animals pictured above were used properly. Their bodies were only collected to be preserved so that the people who took them could brag about it. They were not eaten, they were not put under research, they were not used for anything other than to brag. The people who do this are solely responsible for making hunting look cruel and unethical. A real hunter or trapper would never do this.
(I’m also going to add that in Minnesota a portion of proceeds from buying hunting licenses goes either towards conservation efforts or to the organizations that help with conservation ie; Pheasants Forever, Minnesota Deer Hunters Association, Grouse Forever, etc etc.)
